Flea Market Funk Review

Thanks to our friends at Flea Market Funk for this nice little write-up of the new singles. Read an excerpt below and then follow the link for the full piece.

"...this record is our favorite soul record of 2017 so far, and seriously will make top ten lists at year’s end. It’s that good. Authentic sounding, no retro throwback bullshit at all, it’s raw and lovely at the same time. Billy The Kid commands the spotlight with some psychedelic soul on the B side with “Honey Bee”. Lo-fi but packing a wallop of sound, he takes advantage of lap steel guitar, Farfisa organ, Maestro Rhythm King drum machine and fuzz guitar, and that haunting voice of his to take this B side into the sunset. While both sides of this record represent Dala Records proper. it’s not just the representation that’s the reason you should own this record. It’s authentic soul through and through, it’s out of New York City, and both sides are special in their own way."

Punchland Interview: Camellia Hartman

IMG_7101.JPG

Enjoy this in-depth interview with the lovely Camellia Hartman courtesy of the fine folks at Punchland. Read a snippet below then follow the link for the full scoop.

"For Miss Hartman, instrumentation came before her vocals. “t’s funny, I’ve always thought of myself as a violinist above all else in terms of music, but over the past few years, I’ve enjoyed lending my voice to many different projects in all pockets of my community. Billy and I have been friends for years and in that time we’ve helped each other workshop a few ideas. This new song s an exciting turn in our partnership. Billy has really mastered the craft of analog recording, and I overcame some vocal issues I was battling. The timing was just right. It started organically as a casual, friendly collaboration but ended up planting the seed for many more projects to come.” Listeners will be overjoyed with the new material that will eventually take over the airwaves in the future."

Review: "Breathin' Hard (Over You)" b/w "Honey Bee"

14667.png

The Joy of Violent Movement blog was nice enough to cover the new split single from Camellia Hartman and Billy the Kid. Read a snippet below and then follow the link to see the full article.

"“Breathing Hard (Over You)” was recorded and mixed on an 8 track tape machine, which further emphasizes the classic Motown meets Northern soul production. And while making the song sound as though it could have been released as a 45rpm single back in 1964, the production manages to give Hartman’s tender yet playfully coquettish vocals room to express an aching yet somewhat girlish longing and desire.

Aukstik’s contribution “Honey Bee” is a twangy, slow-burning, 70s AM rock meets Muscle Shoals-leaning bit of soul that features Aukstik’s tender falsetto over an arrangement featuring lap steel guitar, Farfisa organ, Maestro Rhythm King drum machine, fuzzy guitar chords and a sinuous hook — and while nodding at psych rock, the song to my years reminds me a bit of Sandra Rhodes’ sadly forgotten Muscle Shoals meets Nashville solo debut, Where’s Your Love Been."

Album Review: Michael Harlen - The Big Country EP

Check out a wonderful review of The Big Country EP from the good people at Mother Church Pew. Read a snippet below and then follow the link for the full write-up.

"Harlen lyrically explores his loves and his travels, each song delivered with tenderness over acoustic strings attached to mandolins, guitars, and open back banjos, with easy touches of yearning pedal steel for the occasional heartstring tug. The stories end with stream-of-consciousness-like experimental closer “The Fixture,” as the New York City-based Harlen energetically recounts a city bus trip as his imagination runs wild."

Track Premiere: John Fatum "The Little Pie Blues"

We are proud to present the new single from singer/songwriter John Fatum, "The Little Pie Blues," premiering today at The Daily Country. John speaks about the origins of the song below:

"I wrote the song in the Fall on my back porch in Brooklyn where I have a beautiful little window sill. I was sitting on the deck, playing my guitar when I got into the pulsating rhythm of that little guitar phrase. I was thinking about a girl, but I was also thinking about the metaphor of the porch, the mood and how pretty it was outside and I imagined mixing up the metaphors with a girl and a pie sitting on a window sill - and the song was born there."

Exclusive Interview With John Fatum

Enjoy this in-depth interview with John Fatum courtesy of the good folks at East of 8th. Read a snippet here and then check out the full interview via the link below.

"Fatum’s collective of creative friendships, a group which includes Sarah Jarosz, who stepped in to play mandolin and contribute backing vocals to the project, came in handy for recording; he also has fully embraced and immersed himself in the folk and Americana scene in Brooklyn, and delved deeper into the catalogs of the artists he admires. “I really tried to simplify the songs and the lyrical messages on this album; I spent a lot more time trying to find just the right words. There are still storytelling elements, but as I get more into the catalogs of my favorite songwriters, I’m amazed at how they’re able to progress in their writing,” he declares. “Bruce Springsteen, Sam Cooke, and Willie Nelson are able to convey a message in a way that can potentially be a universal experience or feeling. That was my goal for this album, to tap into how the lyrics and the mood can match each other.”"

Single Premiere | John Fatum "Ride On Nebraska"

We are proud to present to you the new single and music video from John Fatum courtesy of our friends at The Grateful Web. "Ride on Nebraska" is out today!

"Brooklyn songwriter John Fatum takes on a haunting and cinematic tone with his newest single, Ride On Nebraska, out today on Dala Records. Written while crossing state lines with touring act The Rad Trads, Nebraska captures the awe and mystery of visiting new corners of the American experience. Supported by friends and New York folk scene veterans Sarah Jarosz and Hannah Read, John and the band create a kind of magic that can only occur between talented, tight-knit friends reaching epic back porch jam proportions. Amplified by the analog recording process of Dala Records’ founder Billy Aukstik, the sounds rendered on John’s new single transport the listener straight to the rolling prairies of America’s Great Plains."

The New Album From John Fatum

IMG_7266.jpg

Thanks to the good folks at Grateful Web for this special look into John Fatum's upcoming LP. Big ups to our friend Annie Bartholomew as well. Read a snippet below and then follow the link below to read the full story.

"Brooklyn songwriter John Fatum’s self-titled album weaves a legacy of story and sound. Recorded on an 8-track reel-to-reel tape machine in New York’s East Village, his second full-length album carries timelessness amplified by Dala Records’ analog process which captures the imperfection and beauty of live performance with shades of Rolling Stones’ Beggar’s Banquet and The Band’s Music From Big Pink. Trained as a jazz percussionist at Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, 26-year-old John Fatum effortlessly blends the styles of music he grew up listening to in Chicago's north side. Influenced by country blues, gospel, Americana, jazz, and Gulf Coast sounds, John takes on the characters and mythology of those who became before him."

Billy The Kid 7" Single Premiere

You've waited long enough...so here it is...the new 7" single from Billy The Kid & The Soulful Saints! Premiering now via the good folks at Vinyl Mag. Listen here

The follow-up to the 2015 debut single "Save a Little Love for a Rainy Day," "Heartstrings" was recorded and mixed on an 8-track tape machine and showcases Billy The Kid's refined production skills, with compositions relying heavily on the sound of the Maestro Rhythm King drum machine, Farfisa organ, and piano. Falsetto vocals and the lush string sound of The Hartstrings round out the arrangements and harken back to an era when soul 45s were king. Composed of members from Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires, The Dap-Kings and The Shacks, The Soulful Saints serve as the perfect backing band for these vocal features and they shine on the Allen Toussaint-inspired instrumental cut, Hit and Run.

Village Voice Spotlight

So excited to share this incredible feature courtesy of The Village Voice and our good friend Annie Bartholomew. Read an excerpt here and then follow the link below for the full shabang!

http://www.villagevoice.com/music/extraordinaire-billy-aukstiks-dala-records-has-the-charles-bradley-seal-of-approval-9210684

"UNLIKE HIS BROOKLYN PREDECESSORS IN THE ANALOG LABEL GAME (DAPTONE, TRUTH & SOUL, AND DUNHAM ALL COME TO MIND), AUKSTIK KEEPS HIS CATALOG FLUID, ATTRACTING TALENT FROM ACROSS NEW YORK’S AMERICANA AND JAZZ SCENES. THE ROSTER INCLUDES 26-YEAR-OLD SONGWRITER AND JAZZ PERCUSSIONIST JOHN FATUM, WHO CHANNELS THE TRADITIONS OF DELTA BLUES, MIDWESTERN STYLES, AND CONTEMPORARY AMERICANA AS A SOLO ARTIST, AS WELL AS HIS TOURING BRASS BAND, THE RAD TRAD’S.

The two met in their hometown of Chicago when Fatum needed a trumpet player for his sibling band, the Fatum Brothers Jazz Orchestra. After graduating from Eastman School of Music, Fatum moved to the city, where Aukstik enlisted him to sing on some of his own demos. Before long, the pair were recording a full-length record on 4-Track in Aukstik’s old East Village apartment. “John has been the artist that has grown right alongside the label every step of the way,” says Aukstick. “I would consider him the most integral element to us being who we are today.”

On December 9th, Dala will release Fatum’s second full-length album, a self-titled LP with appearances from his friends, including Texas songwriter Sarah Jarosz and Scottish musician Hannah Read. “When you’re trying to make it,” says Fatum of his choice to release with Dala, “It’s easier to try and make it with people you love.”"
